The Lufkin District Bicycle Plan is studying ways to make it easier to ride a bicycle on state roads in Angelina, Houston, Nacogdoches, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, and Trinity counties. These counties make up the Lufkin District which is the outlined area on the map.

We’d like to invite you to review our recommendations on TxDOT roadways serving the following four functions:

How to Use This Map

This map displays TxDOT's draft Bikeway Functions recommendations for state roads and highways in the Lufkin District. A Bikeway Function describes the role a roadway may serve for people traveling by bike and helps guide future design decisions. Bikeway Functions help TxDOT understand what kind of bicycle trips may occur on a roadway, so engineers can design for those needs.

This map shows the Bikeway Function we recommend for each state road and highway — the role it should play for people riding bicycles. Recommendations are based on nearby destinations and how people travel in the area today. Bikeway Functions help TxDOT understand what kinds of bicycle trips may occur on a roadway, so engineers can design for those needs. Click on any road segment to tell us what you think of our recommendation for that location.

This map shows recommended Bicycle Tourism Trails. Bicycle tourism can include recreational activities such as going camping by bicycle, touring an area for several days by bike, or taking a recreational day ride. Routes may follow state-owned roads or local roads. This map shows recommended routes from the 2018 Bicycle Tourism Trails Study, with proposed changes that would reach additional destinations, connect travelers to services, or direct bicyclists along more comfortable and appealing routes.

Scoring Highway Locations and Identifying Priorities

Each location where bicycling needs exist was scored based on statewide planning goals. The goals and criteria used were:

Promote Safety: Near collisions sites where people walking or bicycling were injured or killed; near K-12 schools and community centers serving youth and older adults; higher posted speed limits
Deliver the Right Project: Higher numbers of bikeway needs present in segment; near upcoming TxDOT projects; improvement could close gap between existing bikeways
Focus on the Customer: Higher numbers of public comments left near this location during a previous survey for the district bike plan.
Optimize System Performance: Areas where people make more trips of 3 miles or less; near local destinations such as supermarkets, libraries, healthcare, universities, and parks; connects to existing and planned local bikeways; connects to transit stops and stations
Preserve our Assets: Maintenance needs for pavement and bridges
Foster Stewardship: Areas with greater densities of residents and jobs; near communities in need of affordable transportation options; near communities exposed to high crash and high traffic corridors; near communities with high rates of health issues like asthma and heart disease; near historic destinations like museums and landmarks

To treat large and small communities fairly, scores were compared for highway locations among communities of similar population sizes. This identified high priority locations across the district, in urban, suburban, and rural areas.
